Rains County Veterans Transportation
(903) 474-7231
Rains County has a veteran transportation system for transporting Rains County veterans to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical appointments. The service will arrive at the veterans home, transport them to a VA medical facility, and return them to their home. The vehicle is handicap accessible.
Eligibility:
1. Veterans or family members who are eligible for care at VA medical facilities.
2. Available for those who do not have the ability or capability to drive themselves to VA medical facilities. i.e. cannot drive a motor vehicle, vehicle is inoperative, scheduled medical procedure prevents driving on the return trip etc… Please call the contact number below with questions.
3. In addition to the person with the VA medical appointment, another person can also ride along as an attendant.
How to request a ride:
1. Preregister first if possible.
2. Call (903) 474-7231 to register and verify eligibility.
3. Call minimum of 24 hours in advance. The sooner the better. Due to appointment conflicts, not all requests may be possible. We have one vehicle serving four VA medical facilities.
4. If already registered call (903) 474-7231 to talk to a dispatcher and schedule your ride.
Volunteer:
Drivers and escorts are volunteers. If you want to volunteer as either a driver or a volunteer, call (903) 474-7231 and sign-up. You must have a good driver’s records. Our volunteers are the heart of this program and our transportation system could not function without them.
This program is made possible by a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission, Fund for Veterans’ Assistance. The Fund for Veterans’ Assistance provides grants to organizations serving veterans and their families. Funding for these grants comes from a portion of veterans scratch-off lottery tickets
